New version of Utopia Documents is out!

There is a new version of the semantic scientific PDF reader Utopia Documents, available from http://www.utopiadocs.com.

New features include a printing facility and resources such as OpenPHACTS (a pharmacological resource aimed at speeding up drug discovery). Among other changes are: certification for apple, bug fixes, open-by-URL (suitable for journals such as eLife, PeerJ and journals on Highwire), and a plugin for Genecards.

CiteULike now carries the AQ box with life and biomedical abstracts

One of the scientific sites that has recently been reported as ‘in the pipeline’ for presenting the AQ laboratory product link box, CiteULike (http://citeulike.org), has just gone live. CiteULike is a free service for managing and discovering scholarly references, and the AQ link box will over the coming weeks gradually appear with the millions of life and biomedical abstracts on the site.

Increased click traffic

We are pleased to report a continued and strong increase in our monthly click traffic numbers. February, the month we commenced click charging, generated 12.6% of all clicks to date. April on the other hand generated 50.5%. All suppliers are experiencing a monthly increase in their click numbers.

Increasing journal coverage.

As you may be aware we are in the process of processing Elsevier’s life science journal portfolio. This consists of ca. 1,275 journals (ca. 1.2m scientific papers). We do expect click numbers to rise significantly once we have completed the content processing. We are in advanced talks with other publishers and content hosts and a number are already ‘in the pipeline’ for presenting the AQ link box: http://citeulike.org/ and Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory Press. CSHL Press will be technically trialing the AQ box as one of journals on the HighWire Platform, which will enable extending the AQ service to the many other journals on HighWire. More news once we have sorted out additional platforms.

New technologies

We soon expect to unveil a new third way of helping to generate traffic to your site. The “AQ Bookmarklet” – its final brand name has not yet been decided upon – is a piece of javascript code, used as a bookmark, that will allow a researcher, irrespective of the browser they use, to semantically index all content shown on their desktop. Every ‘concept of scientific significance’ is then subsequently dynamically linked with more information about that concept and where there are relevant lab products that could be associated, linked with those as well. A simple click will lead the user to these products.

Database of products increasing

Following recent supplier additions the AQnowledge deep link product database now holds more than 1.65 million deep link URLs to products in supplier catalogs. We are looking to grow this database, so that more suppliers can reap the benefits of clicks direct from scientific content.

AQnowlege Portal

We won’t be switching on the AQnowledge portal for a few weeks yet. We are conducting some data feed tests and once we are happy that the system works well then we will activate it. Before we do so you will be issued with secure pass codes so you can view click activity from various sources on your account. The portal will sit on http://aqnowledge.com/

Collaboration with Elsevier extended

Elsevier, the world’s largest provider of scientific, technical, and medical information products and services, has agreed to a substantial extension of its current collaboration with Academic Concept Knowledge Ltd. (AQnowledge).

Hitherto, the AQnowledge service had been embedded in 50 of Elsevier’s journals, which is now to be extended to some 1275 titles over the coming months. Subscribers to all of Elsevier’s life, biomedical and biochemical science journals will be able to click directly on ‘deep’ links to information about individual laboratory products that are identified to match concepts of biological, biomedical or biochemical significance mentioned in the text of articles in those journals. These links, generated on-the-fly for all the articles, are being presented alongside abstracts as well as their full-text versions. The journals include such titles as Cell, the Journal of Molecular Biology, and Tetrahedron. The ability to show these links has been made possible by the deployment of sophisticated semantic text mining tools, optimised for life and biomedical sciences, that use specific thesauri and algorithms to find relevant concepts in the text and subsequently match them to product data and information in AQnowledge’s database.

AQnowledge’s ever-expanding database currently consists of well over 1.5m products from a variety of laboratory equipment providers. It was built in response to calls from suppliers who are keen to focus on ROI-based marketing strategies and researchers who are in need of convenient access to precise and granular laboratory product information. By feeding publishers’ web content with product links from AQnowledge’s database, suppliers get to engage in precision marketing and ROI-based programmes.

American Society of Plant Biologists adopts Utopia Documents

The American Society of Plant Biologists adopts Utopia Documents, software designed by scientists for scientists, to enrich PDF versions of articles in its journals. Plant Physiology and The Plant Cell are the first plant science journals to apply this novel technology to improve scholarship.

As part of its efforts to make articles published in its journals ever more useful to researchers, the American Society of Plant Biologists (ASPB) will, from January 8, 2013, enrich Plant Physiology and The Plant Cell articles with Utopia Documents. All PDF versions of new articles published from the start of 2013 — along with many more
published over the preceding years — will incorporate the advanced features that are accessible to the user via the free Utopia Documents PDF viewer.

On 28 December 2012 — only days ago — we reported that the AQ lab product link database topped 1 million. As said then, we expected growth in the near future. That growth came even quicker than expected then, and as of today, the AQ dB contains more than 1,5 million links. And it doesn’t stop there. Watch this space!

The AQnowledge database of deep links to laboratory reagents and supplies — which are associated with articles, even with individual concepts, in the scientific literature to which they are most specifically relevant, and displayed with them — is constantly growing and has now exceeded 1 million links to unique products to reach 1.1 million at present. Further substantial expansion is expected in the near future, as the interest among suppliers of laboratory products to be included is growing.

When PDFs of scientific articles are read with the free Utopia Documents PDF-reader (www.utopiadocs.com), any keyword or phrase of life-scientific or biomedical relevance can be highlighted in the text and lead to further information via live interactive links to web resources. Utopia Documents is a semantic, scientific, web-enabled PDF reader. Utopia Documents can be downloaded for free.

The purpose of Utopia Documents is to help science move forward collaboratively. Because scientific knowledge is fragmented and often ‘buried’ in static content, there are many ‘unknown knowns’ in science. Much time is often wasted by repeating scientific experiments, by trying to verify facts, or by simply trying to find relevant further information. Utopia enables scientists to get the most from the scientific literature by providing links to appropriate web resources and metadata. Although Utopia is a PDF-reader, it bridges the web-connectivity gap with HTML content by making normally static PDFs fully web-enabled (as long as the user is online).

New version of Utopia Documents released

In collaboration with Academic Concept Knowledge Ltd. (AQnowledge), Lost Island Labs Ltd. has released Utopia Documents 2.0. The free, scientific and semantic PDF-viewer Utopia Documents has been dramatically improved and extended from its version 1.2 and has highly impressed those researchers who have seen and tested it prior to release. The wealth of information the Utopia Documents PDF-viewer is linked to includes the AQ product database of more than three quarters of a million highly precise links to laboratory supplies and equipment from well over 30 participating suppliers, enabling researchers to link, directly from the scientific literature, to appropriate products relevant to what they are reading (e.g. the materials and methods section of journal articles or protocols).
