New version of Utopia Documents released

In collaboration with Academic Concept Knowledge Ltd. (AQnowledge), Lost Island Labs Ltd. has released Utopia Documents 2.0. The free, scientific and semantic PDF-viewer Utopia Documents has been dramatically improved and extended from its version 1.2 and has highly impressed those researchers who have seen and tested it prior to release. The wealth of information the Utopia Documents PDF-viewer is linked to includes the AQ product database of more than three quarters of a million highly precise links to laboratory supplies and equipment from well over 30 participating suppliers, enabling researchers to link, directly from the scientific literature, to appropriate products relevant to what they are reading (e.g. the materials and methods section of journal articles or protocols). Further details can be found in the Utopia Quick Guide on the Utopia Documents site.

Utopia Documents 2.0 is free and available from Utopiadocs.com.

Not a Hamburger

Steve Pettifer’s talk at Science Online London 2011 (September 2-3) on challenges and opportunities in semantic science publishing has been videoed and is now online. The title is a reference to his recent paper, “Ceci n’est pas un Hamburger”. Highly recommended fare for any scientist and anybody interested in how scientists work and communicate. New Utopia PDF reader released

Manchester, 10 August 2011 – Today, Utopia has released version 1.2.2 of their unique semantic scientific PDF-reader, the first version that is fully AQnowledge-enabled. The Utopia Documents research tool is freely available from http://getutopia.org and can be used on Mac, Windows and Linux platforms.

The semantic and link-out functionalities of the Utopia Documents PDF-reader offer readers of scientific literature the convenience and time-saving of exploring knowledge and information – including information about relevant laboratory supplies and equipment – directly from the articles they are reading. Utopia Documents is unique in that it offers the functionality to use all the powers of the Web directly from PDFs, which were hitherto regarded as ‘static’ documents.

antibodies-online.com joins AQnowledge consortium, supplying up to 300,000 antibodies and related products for concept matching.

Epsom, 25 July 2011 – Academic Concept Knowledge Ltd. (AQnowledge) is happy to announce that antibodies-online GmbH, the online antibodies retailer, has joined the AQnowledge supplier launch consortium initiative. The consortium, to be comprised of laboratory equipment suppliers, will assist AQnowledge in bringing concept enrichment of research literature to the global research community. The goal of the consortium is to help researchers save time and be more effective in navigating the ever-expanding sea of information that is available to them. Details on specific and relevant research products used at the bench are to be part of the information that AQnowledge will provide. Where possible any of antibodies-online’s products will be linked to concepts in scientific literature. This will offer significant benefits to researchers as they look for highly relevant sources of further information.

Tim Hiddeman, Managing Director of antibodies-online commented: “We are truly impressed by the concept-matching technology AQnowledge provides. Matching life sciences products with scientific literature is certainly a non-trivial exercise. Reaching out to scientists with products related to the article which they are studying is certainly very attractive to us.”

AQnowledge adds Intramalls suppliers to semantic navigation tools.

Epsom, 25 July 2011 – AQnowledge is launching two content navigation tools for the benefit of researchers and suppliers; a Scientific PDF reader (in collaboration with Utopia) and a bookmarklet for browser-based content. Both tools will semantically analyze and index medical or life-science texts that a user accesses via their, or library network, computer. By focussing on the meaning (the concept) rather than the word, synonyms such as ‘cancer’, ‘neoplasm’ and ‘tumour’ are taken into account when matching text with products, even if only one of these words is actually used in the text in question. Each of the concepts recognised in the text is then highlighted and produces, if clicked on, additional information drawn from a selection of relevant databases that is closely connected with the concept in question. These hyperlinked options are displayed in a side bar that offers researchers direct – one click – access to further semantically matched information, including product information.

All Intramalls suppliers of research equipment and supplies have been entered as primary concepts into our concept thesaurus. Clicking on a company name when it occurs in the text will serve a hyperlink to that supplier’s home page and be displayed in the reader’s side bar. Suppliers will shortly have the option of linking their entire catalogues to concepts in any scientific literature. This means that whenever there is semantic concept-product association a deep link to the supplier’s catalogue will be displayed. This promises to be a new departure in lead generation for suppliers looking for an effective way to market products to customers.

The attached link is to a video demonstration of the PDF reader that will be available on AQnowledge’s website from August 1.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uI_BjyLzJ5k

AQnowledge announces New England Biolabs’ participation in supplier consortium to provide enhanced web and PDF content for life science researchers.

Epsom, 25 July 2011 – Academic Concept Knowledge Ltd (AQnowledge) confirms that New England Biolabs Inc (NEB) has joined the AQnowledge supplier launch consortium initiative, as one of its first participants. The consortium will assist AQnowledge in bringing concept-enriched scientific literature to the global research community. More specifically, AQnowledge will embed dynamically enriched weblinks, at appropriate points in the scientific literature, to allow researchers to access more information on a given topic. This information will be made available in real-time and will be driven by the actual meaning of the words in the literature rather than just keywords.

The goal of the consortium is to help researchers save time and be more effective in navigating the ever-expanding sea of information that is available to them. Details on specific and relevant research products used at the bench are to be part of the information that AQnowledge will provide.

Andy Bertera, Director of Marketing at NEB, commented: “AQnowledge is developing a suite of new tools that will enable life science researchers to more readily capitalize on the rich scientific content that exists via the internet. By combining these tools with NEB’s high quality research products, we hope to be able to simplify some of the decisions that researchers are required to make regarding how best to advance their studies.”

Jan Velterop, CEO of AQnowledge, adds: “We are most pleased and grateful that NEB is lending its support to our goals of making it possible for life scientists to be more productive than they already are, spending less effort on time-consuming search for much needed information, but instead, using the convenience of more direct, highly relevant links from the scientific literature.”

The Utopia PDF-reader, which has been optimized for scientific documents, will present deep links to NEB’s product portfolio, wherever there is an association between the product and a highlighted keyword, concept or phrase in the literature. The AQnowledge Bookmarklet, a bookmark-like browser tool, will do the same in HTML web content.
